(Ryan Howes, Cronkite News Service) Already struggling with years of physical and emotional problems after his military deployment, Daniel Somers could not also handle a dysfunctional Department of Veterans Affairs health system.

In the suicide note he left behind last summer, the former Phoenix resident said the VA had let him down.

His was one of several cases presented Thursday as the House Veterans Affairs Committee tried to put a "human face" to the problem of veteran suicides, now occurring at a rate of about 22 a day.

Somers' family members, who testified Thursday, have collected what they call "systemic issues at the VA" since his June 2013 death.
