A new law called Keep Families Connected Act will allow people serving time in California prisons to cake phone calls for free in 2023.
The free calls began on Jan. 1., plus family and friends will also be able to call the prison free of charge.
Making the calls free is meant to help people serving time maintain a "strong support system," so that they have a better chance of successfully adapting outside of prison.
