Taylor Swift might never record another full-blown country album, but that doesn't mean that the 28-year-old chart-topper doesn't have love for her origins. On Saturday night (March 31), a crowd of Easter eve concert-goers saw Swift in all her early glory when she surprised folks with an impromptu set at Bluebird Cafe in Nashville.
Swift's surprise appearance was witness to about 40 patrons when she joined songwriter Craig Wiseman, who she met at a charity show when she was just a teenager. While Wiseman was headlining the intimate performance, Swift's cameo proved noteworthy because Bluebird Cafe is where she was discovered as a teenager. In case you don't know the backstory, Big Machine Label Group's Scott Borchetta saw Swift play the room when she was an eighth-grader and offered her a publishing deal.
During her appearance, Swift performed some of her own hits like "Love Story" and "Shake it Off" as well as a cover of her Little Big Town penned track, "Better Man." Interestingly enough, "Love Story" could have been a joint collaboration between Swift and Wiseman, but the veteran songwriter decided to pass up the opportunity to co-write it with her. Mid-appearance, Swift recalled how she was just 17 when the pair had their first co-writing session and Wiseman said he didn't get her intention for the future hit. "I couldn't stop thinking about the idea," Swift told the audience of writing the song. "I thought there was something to it. I really liked it. This is the song I almost wrote with Craig Wiseman. It's called 'Love Story.'"
Saturday night also included shots of Fireball whiskey as the pair reminisced about their outing at a CMT after-party one year that had Swift complaining about a headache the next day. "I wanted to say a big thank you to the Bluebird Cafe," Swift told the crowd. "I think any songwriter in town would echo my sentiments and say that this is kind of the only place where this exists — this particular place where you get to come and hear the writer's take on the songs they've put out into the world."
